Jay Som, bringing dreamy lush pop to Austin - A continuation of her “Belong” tour

Jay Som continued their 2025 “Belong” tour by kicking off December’s leg at Austin’s “Bushy Street Commons,” a hidden venue tucked away in an alleyway.
Through the doors of Bushy Street Commons and down a narrow hallway with inviting red and blue lights, a merch table was placed in the corner of the venue. Next to the table, a bar with bright neon signs advertised specialty drinks for the night. Coats, sweaters, and beanies filled the venue as the dress code was chosen by the weather that night.
As show time approached, the main lights dimmed while a giant disco ball hovering between the crowd and stage glittered. For tonight’s show, the openers were “Proun,” a trio based in Austin, and “Jahnah Camille” from Birmingham, Alabama. Alex Peterson, Proun’s drummer, began their set by lightly tapping their drumsticks together. Then, all in unison, the band members strummed a mellow chord pattern that washed over the crowd like a warm wave of sunshine after a cold breeze. Steady haze drifted and rose into the set lights, slowly dancing and swirling in tone with the guitar's distortion.
After a brief intermission, “Jahnah Camille” began their set, performing songs from their EP “My Sunny Oath!”. By the third song, Jahnah went into a flow state, undoing their ponytail and letting the music take over them, followed by their guitarist Jay, who swayed in movement and hunched over, clinging onto the guitar with every strum and lyric that was sung.

Before the main performance, a few more faces filled and blended within the crowd, holding plastic cups to keep themselves warm. In a red cotton guitar strap holding their signature wooden Stratocaster appeared Jay Som. Not a minute was wasted as the tour's interlude began to play and faded into “Appointments.” Light smiles and beaming eyes were on Jay Som as fans swayed side to side to this soft, delicate song while singing:
“Don't call / Don’t run / Loose ends”
Then diving back into 2019, Jay Som played “Superbike” from their “Anak Ko” album. They pulled out an acoustic guitar on stage and harmonized with backup vocals from guitarist Carey Clayton. Before the end of the song, a solo emerged from the lead guitarist, Joao Gonzalez; in a haze of distorted sound, a blanket of bright chords followed with reverb. In its final moments, Joao let out an intense cry from the guitar, inching closer to the drummer. Now in unison, following each other's music, the song was coming to an end.
Before their last song, Jay Som went on to thank “Proun” and “Jahnah Camille” for opening up the show, then gave the fans a short but personal story of their love for Austin.
“I love Austin so much because I was here for a week back in 2017. That week, I met my partner and fell in love. Every time I come back to Austin, it reminds me of that.”
With a sweet memory attached to Austin, the beginning of “Bus Song” began to play as the crowd's cheers faded away. In this moment, the stage let out a cloud of smoke while the disco ball, on its final spin, shone over the venue.
As Jay Som continues their tour, be sure to check out their upcoming stops before their last show on December 20th!
