Charlotte Lawrence is no rookie in the music industry; in fact, she has been releasing music for nearly a decade. However, with the release of her first full-length album, Somewhere, this past June and the launch of the “Somewhere” Tour to accompany it, she marks a significant turning point in her career and displays her growth and maturity as an artist.

Taylor Bickett

The Austin stop of the “Somewhere” Tour took place at ACL Live at 3TEN, the smaller, more intimate venue next to the larger Moody Theater. It was the perfect setting for Lawrence’s tour, which she said she “wanted to create to be really intimate and special,” and to “feel stripped and human.” There was no separation between the fans and the stage, allowing for some memorable interactions later in the night.

The show opened with Taylor Bickett, a singer-songwriter who went viral for her song Quarter Life Crisis in 2022. With just her guitar, Bickett performed a number of tracks that told stories about past relationships, including IDIOT! and Firefly Collector. As she closed with her most popular song, singing the viral lyrics, “I swear 16 was yesterday, but now I'm closer to 28,” many in the audience perked up in recognition of who she was and lined up to meet her after the set.

Lawrence took the stage without a grand entrance or elaborate visuals. She simply walked out, greeted the crowd, and began with her opening song, I Don’t Wanna Dance. She followed it with Morning, the first single from the album, and Why Do You Love Me, a track from her self-titled EP released in 2021. She was accompanied only by her guitarist and keyboardist, Matt, rather than a full band as she had on previous tours.

Between songs, Lawrence conversed with the crowd by sharing personal anecdotes about writing the album and putting the tour together. Like many others, she spent the pandemic reflecting on herself as both a person and an artist. She explained, “Even though it’s my third project, I viewed it as my first debut album because I just put my heart and soul into it…I wanted to view this tour as my first ever tour.”

As she continued to perform songs off Somewhere, it was evident how personal the album is. Her lyrics were full of rage, regret, betrayal, and heartbreak. One of the most emotional moments of the night came during Bodybag, where it was just Lawrence, a piano, and her haunting vocals. The stripped-down setup and intimate venue made it easy for her to convey raw emotion without being overshadowed by heavy production.

Despite the emotional weight of her songs, Lawrence kept the mood and energy up throughout the night. She shared more interesting tidbits, such as writing a song with both her ex and her current boyfriend, and incorporated the audience during Better Than This, encouraging everyone from the bartenders to the “boyfriends who don’t know what’s happening” to sing along. She also surprised fans by performing Violet Blue for the first time, noting, “I’ve only sung this song once, when I wrote and recorded it.”

She finished the night with Somewhere and Sleeptalking—the former being the title track of the album and the latter one of the earliest songs she has released. After a concert filled with so many great moments, it was surprising that it all happened within the span of an hour. Lawrence put on a show that successfully achieved what she set out to do. It truly felt like a special, once-in-a-lifetime experience where fans connected with her and she was able to showcase the results of all her hard work over the years.
