An exclusive listen to francene rouelle’s new single, “as opposed to what,” demonstrates her broad range. The release of this single follows the drop of “september bby,” both of which lend themselves to fast-paced pop beats that reflect the carefree attitude rouelle is emitting.
Giving 8-bit computer game nostalgia, with its chiptune electronic sounds and pitched-up opening vocals which blend into her harmonic R&B style against a steady beat, this song gives an inside scoop on the feeling of the complete album. The juxtaposition between the distorted vocals mixed with retro sounds, and the lyrical thematics of trying to move past the dating games of a specific someone evinces rouelle’s aptitude for weaving her lyrics and her music together to elicit an overall mood.

On brand with the image presented lyrically and musically, the euphoric cover photo of “as opposed to what” centers rouelle wearing a posh fur shawl, under the glow of a spotlight, she is surrounded by people lounging in party attire. As the lyrics suggest, “god forbid we’re done / can’t a girl have fun / as opposed to what,” the pink and red hue of the subjects dressed for a night out, and the reflection of glitter makeup on rouelle’s face as she stares into the camera signify that she is ready to have fun and move on.
Her contemplative expression reveals the contradictory feelings she has towards the situation-ship she has found herself in. Rouelle navigates the back-and-forth of this relationship through her lyrics, “i’m so sick and tired of your bullshit attitude / god your energy ruins my makeup and my mood / do you wanna fight or do you love me / sunglasses in the dark can’t hide these tears streams” — a glimpse of her soft vulnerability and the pain she is enduring that personalizes her to the listener, while the upbeat rhythms and her positive it-girl mentality maintain her strength in letting go.

This is a drastic shift from single, “september bby” which was released earlier this year with a hyper-pop melody and an overt declaration of changing for the better. Despite both songs possessing an air of confidence via rhythm and attitude, “as opposed to what” leans into the confessional genre that rouelle is exploring. As if given entry to a diary, she allows the listener access to the relationship dynamics, “want me to flip a table / know that shit turns you on / not that badly unstable / and that pisses you off;” this intimate scene acknowledges the manipulative tendencies she is ready to escape. An unfortunately relatable encounter, rouelle’s fans can witness a humanizing version of her, potentially encouraging them to take her approach to breaking free from negative relationships.
With an iconic chorus interlaced with deeply private moments, this single presents a maturity to look forward to in the September album release. Rouelle has a versatile album in store for us, as she merges unlikely genre elements with both relatable and complex themes. True to her lyrics, never met a girl like the francene rouelle unfolding with each released single, with sounds and visuals that push the limits of narrative music and add to the heterogenous community of Texas based, Asian American artists.
