Fresh off a performance at Lost In Dreams, Tsu Nami was the headliner at the Reset Rooftop Bar in midtown Houston. Part of her larger “Club Tsu” tour, the Los Angeles-based DJ and producer graced the city with her electrifying mixing and production. Tsu Nami marks a wave of female Asian artists solidifying themselves in a historically male-dominated EDM space, bringing inspiration to up-and-coming artists and EDM lovers alike. A seasoned artist with performances at Red Rocks, The Gorge, ADE, and EDC Las Vegas, Tsu’s first time in Texas was not going to disappoint.

As the proverbial clock struck midnight, the club filled up, with the crowd packing in like sardines to get as close as they could to the stage. When Tsu introduced herself, she made sure to note that she was essentially going to freestyle that night, saying, “I have no idea what the f*ck I’m going to play tonight, but let’s have some fun with it!” The crowd cheered with glee.

From the get-go, Tsu brought the energy to the room, and people were headbanging and dancing with joy. After a few songs, she made an announcement: “I want all my hot girlies in here behind me, so if you’re a hot girlie, get over here!” Instantly, a “tsunami” of women made their way to the booth and surrounded Tsu for a few songs before making their way behind her for the rest of the set. The vibe was fun, energetic, and free. Her control of her music was a joy to witness. There were moments where she would build a huge wall of energy and anticipation, hit the drop, stop the drop with a wild scrub by spinning the turntable, and then hit the drop once more—all in the span of ten seconds. The dance floor was full of headbanging, dancing, and friends turning to each other with a deserved stank face of approval after each insane drop.

Some crowd favorites were “Clarity” by Zedd and “Crush” by 2hollis, the former prompting everyone in the room to sing the iconic chorus together. Tsu also played original songs like “eye2eye,” which recently hit one million streams.

A highlight of the night was when Tsu grabbed a friend’s phone from the audience, which was actively on a FaceTime call. She shouted into the mic, “Everyone say hi to my friend!” The entire crowd hurriedly waved and cheered with excitement.

Tsu Nami’s debut headline show in Texas was full of dancing, singing, and good vibes. Each and every attendee, no matter who they were, became an honorary member of the illustrious “Club Tsu” that night. Her performance definitely reignited an itch deep down for EDM music—something I hadn’t explored since my time living in Berkeley. I’m excited to play more of Tsu’s sets while I toil away at my 9-to-5, and to attend and cover future Asian EDM artists performing in Texas, bringing a familiar piece of California’s Asian culture to me, a California expat stuck in the heart of Texas.
