Mypilotis Live at the Rah! Rah! Room

Mypilotis, the dynamic four-piece band from San Antonio, opened the evening with a performance larger than life and music that demanded attention, setting the stage for a night buzzing with energy.

Kicking the night off with a “Funky Jam Session Intro,” the band let the audience know they were ready to let their music fill the room. From the start, the band’s energy pulled the crowd closer to the stage with their first song, Fence Sitter.

Taking a moment to catch her breath, lead singer Chesca, affectionately called “boss man,” asked drummer Edgar to hit her with nine bass drum hits. Matching the rhythm, Chesca kept the momentum high with dance moves before playfully asking, “Was anyone counting?”

Bassist Sophia led the band into their single Limbo with a groovy, pulsing bassline that had the audience moving. The performance took on a theatrical edge as Chesca pulled out a megaphone, her vocals distorted to heighten the track’s already mysterious feel.

Midway through the set, Chesca paused to introduce the band. She started with, “Behind me is our drummer, Edgar,” earning a few laughs as Edgar glanced over his shoulder. Next came guitarist Joey, who answered with a playful salute, followed by bassist Sophia. Joey turned the spotlight back on Chesca, introducing her and announcing that she had only just landed from Japan earlier that afternoon before jumping straight onto the stage.

Delving into a quick Japanese lesson, Chesca introduced the next song, calling it a tongue twister: a cover of Mono No Aware’s Kamukamo-Shikamo-Nidomokamo!! The crowd cheered her along as she seemed to fire words out without a breath. As she caught her breath, she assured the audience, “I promise I was saying words.”

Drawing near the end of their set, the band played their newest single, The Kids Are Alright. With dreamy guitar riffs and danceable snare rhythms, the band was not slowing down. Chesca marched across the stage with more moves, while Joey let his hair whip to the beat.

Introducing the next song, Joey let the crowd know it had been hidden in Chesca’s hard drive for 12 years. The fan favorite The Way I See You rang across the room to cheers and applause. The danceable beat brought more than Chesca to bring out their moves. With a beat too infectious to resist, the band joined in their signature choreography during the chorus, swaying in unison to cheers and applause.

Closing out the night, the band played an instrumental piece with a hidden surprise. As the music swelled, Chesca leapt from the stage and sprinted into the crowd, weaving through the venue so everyone had their own front-row moment. Meanwhile, Joey, Sophia, and Edgar held down the stage. The piece built to a wild crescendo as Chesca lay on the ground, shredding her guitar in a final burst of raw energy.

Rejoining her bandmates on stage, the group thanked the Rah! Rah! Room and the audience for dancing the night away with them.

With a performance larger than life and music that demands attention, Mypilotis is a must-see. If you missed them this time, you will want to catch them at their upcoming shows:
