Dream Pop Duo: The Two Lips at Austin’s Emo’s
Written by Leila Miranda
A Los Angeles based duo formed by two best friends, Jewlz and Andrea, got their start covering songs on TikTok. Coming from Latina and Filipina backgrounds the two quickly became an overnight success when their single, “still love you (todavia)” hit TikTok by storm.
Their debut EP, girl, c’mon!, dropped late last year – a tribute to girlhood, breakups, insecurity, and womanhood. Implementing their dreamy soundscape as they layered harmonies and vocals to each track. With seven songs on the EP amounting to 19 minutes, themes of platonic and romantic relationships became lyrically notable.
Announcing their third “Kiss and Tell" Tour mid February, with their first stop being Austin at Emo’s. Playing a sold out show, a visible line wrapped around the venue. They opened with their first track “play” from their EP, girl, c’mon!. As the duo paired the track with synchronized choreography, fans sang along and followed their every move.
Throughout the show fan favorites like, “favorite apple”, “clue”, and “SICK!” played. Right before the end of “blossom” Jewlz and Andrea held hands and twirled in circles before telling the crowd, “If you came with a friend, give them a hug. If you came with your lover, give them a kiss. If you came by yourself, hug someone else.”
On a sweet note, many fans showed appreciation towards each other. With everyone's eyes still on them, an omnichord was brought to the stage. Many fans cheered as they knew where this would lead.
“So because of the shows, we discovered this cute little instrument, the omnichord,” Jewlz said as they lifted up the omnichord to show it off. “And through the shows we discovered Rebecca Sugar! And well, we had the honor and pleasure of working with her to write a lovely song. This one’s called ‘happy for me’”
Quietly fading into a song, both Jewlz and Andrea sat front and center at the edge of the stage singing “happy for me”. Everyone watched in silence giving them all their attention, as the venue lights softly shifted pulsating through pink and red hues, adding an extra layer to the calm and relaxed scene.
Before the end of their set an unexpected cover was performed, a tribute to their TikTok cover days, "Don't Speak” by No Doubt. Both harmonizing and taking turns singing parts of the song, fans sung along and danced with them pointing and shouting as they sung the lyrics.
“Don't speak, I know just what you're sayin'
So please stop explaining'”
With welcoming arms, Jewlz and Andrea thanked Orca for opening up the night for starting the beginning of this year's “Kiss and Tell” Tour, right before breaking into song to “if you said”, a perfect song to wrap up the set. A song that dwells on reflection, internal struggles and vulnerability. With the crowd swaying side to side and flashlights raised in the air, lyrics flowed from the speakers waving a soft goodbye in the coming end of the show.
Don't forget to check out their latest single that just dropped earlier this week on March 20th, “brb”. For those lucky enough to see them on tour, this one's unforgettable and you’re not going to want to miss this.
