Texas's First All Asian American Improv Troupe Has A Must See Show In Austin!

On the first Friday of each month, from 8:30 to 9:30pm at the Fallout Theatre in Austin, you will find an entertaining group of performers who go by Y’all We Asian. They are Texas’s first all-Asian American improv comedy troupe and if you haven’t seen them before, you should seriously consider catching a show.

The troupe has been around for ten years now, calling the Fallout Theatre home. Most of the members have full time jobs and enjoy doing improv for fun. They meet once a week to rehearse for their monthly shows. Beyond that, they host a monthly “improv jam” at the Fallout on Sundays. This is a free, two hour event that anyone is welcome to participate in. It is specifically advertised as a BIPOC community jam, as they want to give those who are underrepresented in the Austin comedy scene the opportunity to participate. Allies are also welcome, and the event provides a fantastic opportunity for absolutely anyone to try improv out for themselves.
For those who may be unfamiliar with improv, it is a form of comedy where the performers on stage often ask for audience members’ help or suggestions for a topic. Once a topic is selected, the performers take turns getting up on stage and acting out scenes (none of which are rehearsed or predetermined). Therefore each time you go to a show, it will be completely different!
For their shows, Y’all We Asian typically asks audience members to share the name of a group chat they are in and what the chat is about or who is involved. This month, the prompts given by the audience were a family group chat consisting of a daughter leaving soon for college and a group chat amongst friends who meet up every week to share a meal and watch a movie. The members of Y’all We Asian hit the ground running with ideas, and their interpretation of the prompts were quite intriguing and hilarious. Somehow the daughter going off to college led to people grating cheese on their abs at an Italian restaurant, and the movie night turned into a stressful event where the group of friends feared that they might not survive a viewing of Who framed Roger Rabbit (one of them ended up being murdered by the person who rented them the movie). Not only was the acting cracking up the audience for an hour straight, but you could tell by the laughter coming from the performers waiting just off-stage for their turn that they were immensely enjoying themselves.
Y’all We Asian’s next show at the Fallout Theatre will be Friday, September 4th. Following this, they will be traveling to Los Angeles in September to perform at an all-Asian comedy festival! You can purchase tickets to their shows at the Fallout on Eventbrite or at the theatre before the show! Also make sure to check out the Fallout Theatre’s other shows and comedy classes, as supporting the Theatre itself ensures that Y’all We Asian will be able to continue their monthly residency there!
