The Asia Society Texas, established in 1979 by Barbara Bush and Roy M. Huffington, aims to celebrate the various cultures and perspectives of Asians and Asian Americans through cultural and artistic programs. One of these cultural programs is the Night Market, which takes inspiration from night markets across Asia.

Stands of vendors lined the parking lot, selling everything from handmade artisan products to pop culture merchandise. There was a small stage at the center where performers showcased classical Indian dancing and the national dance of the Philippines, Tinikling. The performances truly demonstrated the diverse dancing styles of Asia, and how music can bring people together.

While most of the vendors were located outside, there was more to explore inside the museum. Local artists at the artist alley showcased their art, from crotcheted keychains to jewelry. These were inspired by popular Japanese franchises such as Pokémon and The Legend of Zelda.

These anime and video game franchises have reached audiences all over the world, and their impact was showcased in the exhibit, “The House of Pikachu: Art, Anime and Pop Culture.” The exhibit showcased just how influential characters like Pikachu have become in our society. These characters are easily recognizable and are beloved by audiences both young and old.

The highlight of the night was the sumo performance by Shogeki Sumo, a Houston-based dojo. Volunteers from the crowd were given a chance to wrestle against professional sumo wrestlers. Even children were allowed to participate in a playful manner. The event was entertaining for all while still being educational, with wrestlers teaching the crowd words in Japanese as they showcased different moves and techniques.

Overall, the Night Market was a celebration of Asian culture through art, activities, dance, and performances, bringing people from all over Houston and creating a truly vibrant sense of community and love for Asian culture.
